🦟 How to Tell If Mosquitoes Are Still Active Late in the Year

Don’t Let Cooler Weather Fool You — Here’s What to Watch For

Don’t Let Cooler Weather Fool You — Here’s What to Watch For

As the days get shorter and the evenings a little cooler, most people in the Capital Region assume mosquito season is finally over. But at Upstate Bug Busters, we know better because mosquitoes can stay active well into the fall, especially during those unseasonably warm stretches we often see in September and October.

If you have noticed a few bites while enjoying the crisp fall air, you are not imagining it. Here is how to tell if mosquitoes are still active on your property and why late season control is so important.

🌡️ 1. Warm Days Mean Active Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes thrive when daytime temperatures stay above 50°F. Even if the nights get chilly, a few warm afternoons can bring them right back out. If you are noticing buzzing around your ankles or a few itchy bites after working in the yard, it is a sign that they are still active and breeding nearby.

💧 2. Standing Water Still Attracts Them

Rainy fall weather combined with leaf buildup often creates new pockets of standing water which is the perfect environment for mosquitoes to lay eggs. If you spot puddles in your yard, bird baths that are not emptied, or clogged gutters filled with damp leaves, you can bet mosquitoes are taking advantage of them.

🌿 3. You Notice Them in Shady or Sheltered Areas

As the temperatures cool, mosquitoes become less active in open sunny spaces and instead retreat into shady protected areas. If you notice mosquitoes hanging around

  • The edges of your woods or tree line
  • Under decks or around porches
  • Near piles of leaves or thick shrubs

Then they are using your property as their final stronghold before the frost hits.

🦠 4. Mosquito Bites That Keep Appearing

Even late in the year, mosquito bites mean active mosquitoes. These pests can still transmit diseases like West Nile virus into the fall months. If you or your family members are getting fresh bites, that is a clear sign it is time for another round of protection.

🌿 5. Why Late Season Spraying Is So Important

Many homeowners make the mistake of stopping treatments too early but the mosquitoes do not clock out just because summer is over.

Our 100% all natural mosquito control applications continue to target breeding areas deep in vegetation, leaf litter, and moisture prone zones. By keeping up treatments in September and October, we reduce late season activity and prevent next year’s mosquito population from getting an early start.
