Tick Boom: Why Ticks Are Still a Threat After Summer

Many people assume that once summer ends, the risk of Tick bites diminishes. However, Ticks remain active well into fall and even winter, making it essential to stay vigilant.

Many people assume that once summer ends, the risk of Tick bites diminishes. However, Ticks remain active well into fall and even winter, making it essential to stay vigilant. Understanding why Ticks persist beyond summer and how to protect yourself can help you avoid unwanted bites and Tick-borne diseases.

Why Are Ticks Still a Threat in Fall?

  1. Cooler Weather Extends Their Activity While some pests disappear as temperatures drop, many Tick species—especially black-legged (deer) ticks—thrive in cooler, moist conditions. Fall is peak season for adult deer Ticks, which are responsible for transmitting Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.
  2. Ticks Remain Active Until Freezing Temperatures Ticks don’t die off after summer. Instead, they stay active anytime temperatures remain above freezing (32°F). They can survive in leaf litter, tall grass, and wooded areas, waiting for a suitable host.
  3. Increased Outdoor Activities Fall is prime time for hiking, apple picking, and yard work, all of which increase exposure to Tick habitats. Pets are also at risk when playing in leaves or grassy areas.
  4. Ticks Seek a Final Blood Meal Before Winter Before winter sets in, Ticks search aggressively for a host to feed on. Adult Ticks, in particular, are looking for a meal before laying eggs, making them more likely to latch onto humans and pets.

How to Stay Protected from Ticks in Fall

1. Continue Using Tick Prevention

  • Apply natural Tick repellents to clothing and skin, such as Cedarwood oil.
  • Treat pets with vet-approved Tick preventatives.
  • Wear long sleeves, pants, and light-colored clothing to easily spot ticks.

2. Maintain Your Yard

  • Remove leaf piles and tall grass where Ticks hide.
  • Keep firewood stacked neatly in dry areas to avoid rodent nests (a common Tick host).
  • Create a gravel or mulch barrier around wooded areas to reduce Tick migration into your yard.

3. Perform Regular Tick Checks

  • After spending time outdoors, inspect yourself, children, and pets for Ticks.
  • Pay close attention to behind ears, under arms, along waistbands, and between toes.
  • Shower within two hours of coming inside to help remove unattached Ticks.

4. Schedule an All Natural Tick Treatments The best way to keep Ticks and Tick threats at bay is with consistent, all-natural pest control treatments.
